Some readers want to know what music I listen to when I write.

SCAM A-LAMA DING DONG BOOK COVER JINX JAMES

The answer is I don’t. And that’s because there is already so much music in my Con the Rock Star series, especially Hardball and Payback. I actually write full lyrics for my rock star Marc Charles’ songs, but of course the drama must go on, so only snippets and phrases are included in the final story to give you an idea of what it’d be like if performed. It’s all running though my head at full volume as I write. Crazy!

If I did, like many authors, put the headphones on to get tapping, I guess I’d pick Fifties, Sixties and Seventies Classic Rock and Soul to get me pumping. That got me thinking about Elton’s idol, that great piano player/singer/songwriter Leon Russell, who died a few years ago. I dug out my favourite album of his Asylum Choir Two with Marc Benno. Not quite sure what the guys had for breakfast before they did the mix (very strange stereo???) but there are so many great songs and performances on this album. Check out Trying to Stay ‘Live and Down on the Base. I’d love to know what you think.

See ya next time
